AP vs. CCP - What Should You Choose?

College Recruiting Specialists has partnered with Virteom to engage future college students, trade students, parents, and anybody looking to learn more about getting into the college or university of their dreams. In this video, Jacqui and Kelly talk about AP and CCP classes and how they help fast-track your college education.

AP and CCP classes are great options for students who want to get a jump start on their college education. These types of courses allow you to get ahead with your college credit, and potentially even earn an Associate’s degree before finishing high school. But before you start enrolling in AP and CCP classes, watch the video or read on to learn which option would work best for your situation.

WHAT ARE CCP CLASSES?

CCP classes are also known as College Credit Plus classes. CCP classes are often offered by local colleges, like a community college. These classes count for both high school credit and college credit.

ARE CCP CLASSES RIGHT FOR ME?

Receiving both high school and college credit sounds great, but you should consider which colleges will accept those CCP credits once you’ve finished the course.

It’s important to remember that colleges are businesses too. It is ultimately up to the receiving college, or new college, whether or not they will accept the CCP credits from your community/local college. If they have the opportunity to tell you “Your English 101 credits from your community college don’t match our curriculum; you need to take our English 101 class”, then they’ve just increased their earnings. In the end, it’s always up to the receiving school whether or not they will accept the college credit you earned in a CCP course.

In most states, colleges take their in-state schools' credits. If you know the goal is to attend an in-state school, get credits out of the way, and you want to be cost effective, CCP classes would be a great option for you.

Highly motivated students can often come away with an Associate's degree taking CCP classes even before high school graduation. It's not common, but it can happen for really dedicated students.

WHAT ARE AP CLASSES?

AP Classes, or Advanced Placement classes, are offered to high school students who want to get a jump start on earning college credit.

WHO SHOULD TAKE AP CLASSES?

AP classes are a great fit for students who wish to pursue their education in or out of state.

AP classes are accepted by 99 percent of all colleges. In order to find out if the college you’re looking at accepts AP credit, check their website. Every college has a list of AP credits they accept and what your AP exam score needs to be (it’s typically between a three and a five). A lot of schools accept threes, some only a four or a five, but it’s best to check the college or university’s website.

If you're looking at out-of-state colleges and you're taking AP classes it's really important to study well and get some test prep in for your AP exam. A score of four or five on an AP exam can mean one less college class you have to take. While colleges are looking at your grades, your AP exam score is what’s most important, the grade in the course is unweighted.
