Test-optional doesn’t mean test-irrelevant
Mar 10, 2026I want to clear up one of the biggest misconceptions I hear from parents:
“Since schools are test-optional, we don’t need to worry about ACT or SAT yet.”
Here’s the reality:
- Scholarships still use test scores
- Some schools quietly change requirements
- Certain majors still care deeply
- And late testing creates unnecessary pressure
I’ve seen students skip prep, assume they’re “fine,” and suddenly find themselves scrambling when policies shift. Early testing isn’t about pressure — it’s about leverage.
A baseline test taken earlier (sophomore year!!) gives families:
✔️ options
✔️ time
✔️ confidence
Waiting until junior year often means you miss out on all three.
